1st post

 I'm going to attempt some genealogical blogging here. I have been researching my (and my wife's) genealogical background for some time now (entirely online, mind you), and while I am still a rank amateur at this, I do enjoy the process. I'd like to use this blog as a place to collect stories about our ancestry. 

Much of my own family tree goes back to 17th century Virginia, although there is a branch in early Massachusetts as well. My wife's, on the other hand, is heavily weighted toward 17th century Massachusetts, with a lot of Puritan divines showing up in her tree. 

In the future look for posts here about the Spencers (Virginia) and the Mayos (Massachusetts) along with many others.

Richard Pitman (the elder and the younger)

 My earliest known Pittman ancestor in America is Richard Pitman (note the alternate spelling). He is my 8th great grandfather. According to many online family trees (FTs) he was born in 1618 in Rye, East Sussex. He was baptized there on 9 Nov 1618. His father was Thomas, his mother (possibly) Frances. Thomas died in 1647 in England.  When did Richard come to America? The short answer is, no one seems to know for sure. Most online FTs say that his son Richard (2) was born there in New Jersey in 1660. This places the family in the colony long before the the first Quaker settlements in Salem County (1675 and thereafter), where he would eventually come to settle. Later family evidence indicates that Richard may well have been a Quaker, but he is not on the ship's roster of the Griffin  or the Kent , the two earliest ships to bring Quaker settlers. My great grandparents in 1900: Clark Pittman and Lucinda Greenlee

 This is the 4th and last post focusing on my great grandparents and where they were in 1900. The three previous posts are: James Cornelius Spencer (1866-1928) and Mary Addie Winfrey (1870-1944) Enoch Franklin Morris (1877-1938) and Ella May Biddle (1872-1965) James Lawrence McDaniel (1873-1944) and Midia Belle Meeks (1876-1947) The final pair of great grandparents is Clark Pittman (1851-1931) and and Lucinda Greenlee (1864-1900). The Pittmans were a prolific and also long-lived bunch. The earliest in America was Richard Pitman, who was a Quaker settler in New Jersey in the late 1600s. He lived to be 89 and died at Pennsauken Creek, near present-day Camden. The inventory of his estate was valued at $145 and included "9 old books." It was his grandson, another Richard, who would move the family to Bedford County, Pennsylvania, near the Maryland border. The Stuff of Legend: Thomas "Big Foot" Spencer

The first person I ever discovered in my family tree that had a Wikipedia page was the  Reverend John Mayo , who was the first pastor of the 2nd Church of Boston (a century later it would be known as the "Old North Church"). Little did I know at the time that having Wikipedia-people in my family tree was not going to be a rare or unusual occurrence. With so many ancestors traceable to 17th century Massachusetts and Virginia, the likelihood of running into folks who were important enough to merit a Wikipedia article is pretty high. Not that these people were necessarily admirable, mind you. Some of them I do admire ( John Adams , my 3rd cousin, 8x removed, for example). Many of them, not so much.
