Two at Brandywine

Two of my ancestors were at the Battle of Brandywine, but fighting on opposite sides.

Matthew Cooney (1759-1808). He was born in Botetourt County, Virginia, and served in the 12th Virginia Regiment of Foot under Captain Michael Bowyer. The 12th was with Washington at Valley Forge, among other exploits. Matthew is my 5th great grandfather.

Then there was Robert Morris (1754-1829). He was on the British side, a member of the 52nd Regiment of Foot, serving under Captain J. Powell. The 52nd was at Bunker Hill, where they took quite a beating. Robert was my 4th great grandfather.

Thomas Pittman: Licking Creek to Gnaw Bone

 Thomas Pittman, son of William Elias, was born in 1809 at Licking Creek, Pennsylvania, and died 84 years later near Gnaw Bone, Indiana. His father took the family to Monroe County, Ohio, somewhere around 1820. Monroe County had only just been organized in 1815, and in the 1820 census it has just 4,645 people. Monroe County is about 210 miles due west of Licking Creek. Licking Creek was in Bedford County at that time, and in the same 1820 census Bedford County had over 20,000 people. Perhaps the Pittmans were something like the Boones, and wanted only to go where they were no longer in sight of another man's chimney smoke.  The road they would have taken might well have been the famed National Road . Construction had begun in 1811, following part of the old Braddock trail to Pittsburgh. By 1818 it had been completed to Wheeling (about 50 miles north of Monroe County). Daniel Freeman of Beatrice, Nebraska

  I have about 8700 names in my family tree, which seems like a lot until you notice how many trees on Ancestry have 100,000 and more. As a general rule I don’t seek out every possible distant cousin to add to the tree. I try to be as complete as I can be on the direct ancestors, and beyond that look for people who seem interesting to me.  That “seems interesting” gives me a pretty broad leeway. I read somewhere about the man credited with being the first homesteader to take advantage of the 1862 Homestead Act. His name was Daniel Freeman and his homestead was in Beatrice, Nebraska. Now Freeman is a pretty frequent surname in my wife’s ancestry, so I looked into Daniel’s bloodline and sure enough discovered that he was her 7th cousin (4x removed). Note: since Laurie and I are actually related (17th cousins) that means Daniel is my relation as well, but far more distantly.
